Dominican Women Start Fast In Win Over Golden Falcons

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Dominican (N.Y.) College scored the game's first 12 points and went on to an 85-50 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Felician University on Wednesday evening on the Hennessy Center's Coach Baxter Court. Dominican (12-14, 8-9 CACC) earned a sweep of its two-game season series over the Golden Falcons.

Felician senior guard Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y.) set a season scoring high for the second consecutive game, finishing with 23 points. Scanlon also posted five rebounds, four assists and five steals. She was counteracted by Dominican senior forward Deja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J.) who netted 28 points in 23 minutes. Gabbidon shot 10-for-13 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.

More than four minutes had elapsed before Felician (2-23, 2-16) dented the scoreboard on a Taylor Trotman (East Orange, N.J.) lay-up. By that time, the hosts had scored a dozen points. Dominican extended to a 17-2 lead on a Gabbidon three-pointer with four minutes, 32 seconds, left in the period, and concluded the first quarter with a 27-9 lead. Gabbidon scored 17 points in the opening 10 minutes.

The Chargers led by as many as 25 points in the second quarter, and 46-23 at halftime. Dominican thwarted any hope of a Golden Falcon comeback by beginning the second half with a 10-0 run. The Chargers largest bulge of the night, 70-32, came with 0:42 to play in the third quarter.

Twelve different players scored for Dominican, which owned a 48-32 rebounding advantage. The Chargers shot 49 percent from the floor, including 12 of 30 from three-point range, and held Felician to 29-percent shooting for the night. The hosts also converted 17 Felician turnovers into 27 points.

Felician freshman Remi Iwelu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored eight points with five rebounds. Trotman finished with six points and seven boards.

Felician concludes its season by hosting Caldwell University on Tuesday, February 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Rutherford. The Golden Falcons will honor seniors Sierra McDuffie (Paterson, N.J.), Alex Salaycik (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Scanlon prior to the game.
