Felician In Seventh After Rain-Shortened First Day Of CACC Men's Golf Championship

WATERTOWN, Conn. – Felician University sits in seventh place out of eight teams after a rain-soaked first of two days of the 2021-22 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Golf Championship tournament. The event is being hosted by Post University at Watertown (Conn.) Golf Club.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, with 36 to be played on Monday. However, Monday's first round was halted for nearly three hours due to heavy rain. During the delay, tournament officials determined that the event would be shortened to 36 holes, with Monday's initial round being completed and Tuesday's remaining as scheduled.

Led by a five-over-par round of 76 from sophomore Nathan Sampson (Leeds, England/Crossley Heath School), Felician posted a team score of 327 on Monday. That total leaves the Golden Falcons 27 strokes behind tournament leader Goldey-Beacom College and eight back of sixth-place Chestnut Hill College.

Sampson enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for ninth place out of 40 individuals. Felician senior Gonzalo Maldonado Felices (Almeria, Spain/Stella Maris) shot 78 on Day 1 and is tied for 12th place. Dominican (N.Y.) College sophomore Alejandro Gomez Cervantes and Goldey-Beacom sophomore Hunter McGee are tied for the lead, both with even-par 71.

"I'm very pleased with the way we responded to playing in the conference tournament and handling the bad weather," said Felician director of athletics and interim co-head coach Ben "JR" DiNallo. "We're definitely showing signs of improvement."

After Tuesday's round, the top five individual finishers plus ties will be named to the CACC All-Tournament Team. The team champion will automatically qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Championship.
