Gary Hanly -- 2018

Gary Hanly

Gary Hanly and John McGarry are forever linked in the history of Felician athletics. Men’s soccer teammates for four years from 1999-2002, they comprised the front line of what remains the most successful period in program history.

During their careers, the Golden Falcons posted a won-lost-tied record of 45-38-3 for Hall of Fame coach Anthony Scorciolla. Their teams won two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships and a pair of NAIA Regional titles. Each player ended his Felician career with a school-record 55 goals.

Hanly also totaled 17 assists for 127 collegiate points. A two-time all-CACC performer, he was chosen an Honorable-Mention NAIA All-
American following his freshman season of 1999.

After receiving his degree in business administration from Felician in 2003, Hanly returned to his native Ireland and participated in semi-pro soccer for various clubs. But he also dove back into his “first love,” Gaelic football, which he has played continuously since that time. A Gaelic football injury in 2016 led him to distance running as rehabilitation, and he has since completed two marathons.

A native of Rosscommon, Ireland, Hanly and his wife, Michelle, have settled in Athboy. The Hanlys were married on New Year’s Eve 2008 and have two daughters -- Sarajane and Aiofe, who was born two weeks before Gary's Felician induction ceremony.

Since 2016, Hanly has worked as an underground miner for Tara Mines in Navan Meath. Tara Mines is the largest mine in Ireland and the fifth-biggest zinc mine in the world.
