Dennis Hulse helped lead the Felician baseball program’s transition into the NCAA. He recently brought more acclaim to his alma mater as a high school coach.
After a standout career as a shortstop at St. Mary High of Rutherford, Hulse, a Kearny native, began his collegiate career at William Paterson University. He eventually transferred to Felician, sat out the 2001 season, and made an immediate impact the following year.
In 2002, the Golden Falcons’ final season as a member of the NAIA, Hulse batted .426 with a .528 on-base percentage, 46 runs scored, 22 runs batted in, and 28 stolen bases in 46 games. Felician won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular-season title and Hulse was named all-NJCBA, all-CACC, first-team all-Region, and Honorable-Mention All-America.
Hulse was an all-conference choice following all three of his seasons as a Golden Falcon, splitting time between second and third base. He still holds Felician career records for batting average (.393) and steals (93), and is second in OBP (.468). In more than 400 Felician plate appearances, Hulse struck out only 19 times.
Hulse played one season of independent professional baseball for the New Haven County Cutters of the Cam-Am League. He then served nine years as a law enforcement officer for the New York City Police Department (NYPD). In 2017 he began a position as the Dean of Discipline at St. Mary High.
Since 2011, Hulse has been the varsity baseball coach at St. Mary. He led the Gaels to the 2019 NJSIAA Non-Public B championship, and was named the state baseball coach of the year by NJ.com.
Hulse is the third baseball player inducted into the Felician Athletics Hall of Fame, joining Frank Quintana and Mike Rooth ’07.
Hulse received a B.S. in history from Felician in 2005. He lives in Egg Harbor and has two daughters, Brynn and Bailey.
