Sarah Root is one of the most accomplished student-athletes in the history of Felician women’s cross-country.
On the course, she holds the distinction of being the only runner in program history to be named all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference four times. She finished in the top 15 in the conference championship meet each year from 2007 to 2010, with a high of seventh place as a sophomore in 2008.
Nine years after her final collegiate race, Root still holds four Felician course records. Overall, she owns two of the 10 best 6,000-meter times in program history; her 24:00 at the 2008 Paul Short Run ranks fourth all-time. Her career-best 5,000-meter time of 20:22 sat in the Golden Falcon top 10 as recently as 2018.
Root graduated from Felician in 2011 with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in elementary education and history. She was named to the CACC All-Academic Team three times and was twice selected an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by the periodical Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
To cap her academic and athletic careers, the Golden Falcon athletics staff chose her as the 2010-11 Felician Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year. No cross-country athlete has won that award since.
Root is the second member of the women’s cross-country program to enter the Felician Athletics Hall of Fame, joining Amanda (Scibetta) Mammolito ‘09.
A graduate of Old Bridge High, Root is a special education teacher at Forrestdale School in Rumson. She also owns her own tutoring service, Rooted In Creativity. She and her husband, Thomas McCarthy, reside in Old Bridge.
