Felician Tops Bloomfield, Wins Second Three-Setter In Row

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J.Olivia Emerson (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) provided offense, Patrycja Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland) defense, and Kayla Gallagher (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) a bit of each as Felician College defeated visiting Bloomfield College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball match held Friday night at Job Gymnasium.

Felician (4-9, 4-5 CACC), which swept Post University on Wednesday, set a school record by winning its sixth consecutive set. The Golden Falcons have earned back-to-back victories for just the second time in program history, and the first since Nov. 1-3, 2007.

The Golden Falcons produced a season-high .283 attack percentage (46 kills, 14 errors, 113 total attacks), led by a .500 (5-0-10) figure from sophomore setter Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers). Emerson, a sophomore outside, hit .389, led all players with 16 kills and added eight digs and two aces. Gallagher, a sophomore middle, amassed a season high with 11 kills, and matched another with three blocks.

Felician took its first lead of the night at 12-11 in the opening set as part of a 9-0 run. They never trailed again in any set for the rest of the night. Giemza served the Golden Falcons to an 18-11 Set 1 edge, and her team used a kill from Alexa Scrivanich (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) to hold off a late Bloomfield charge and win, 25-20.

The hosts out-hit the Deacons, .361-.029, in Set 2. The set, however, was tied seven times, the last time at 14-14. A pair of Gallagher kills then sparked a 6-0 spurt allowing Felician to pull away. The Golden Falcons then got out to a 13-5 Set 3 lead and closed out the match victory on an Emma Reijonen (Joensuu, Finland/Lyseo Joensuum) ace and an Emerson kill.

Giemza picked up a match-high 13 digs. She was also Felician's primary passer, receiving 26 out of Bloomfield's 57 serves with only one error. Reijonan put down eight kills and McKeever had 25 assists and seven digs.

Bloomfield (0-16, 0-7) started six freshmen. Outside hitter Ashley Wright (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) paced the Deacons with 10 kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

The match was Felician's Fourth Annual "Dig Pink" Night. The Golden Falcons, with the assistance of the Felician Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, sold pink T-Shirts and raffled off gift baskets to support the Side-Out Foundation's efforts to defeat breast cancer. Felician team members also wore commemorative pink-lettered jerseys.

The Golden Falcons are back in action on Saturday, when they host Holy Family University at 1 p.m.
