Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Georgian Court University erased a nine-point third-set deficit to key its come-from-behind 3-1 (20-25, 25-7, 26-24, 25-23) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician College on Saturday morning at Job Gymnasium.
The loss kept Felician (4-12, 4-8 CACC) one-half game behind Post University for fourth place in the CACC North Division. The Golden Falcons have seven conference matches left to play. The division's top four teams at season's end will qualify for the league playoffs.
Felician sophomore setter/defensive specialist Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) amassed a career-high seven service aces, one shy of the school record. Classmate Olivia Emerson (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) posted her second double-double of the season with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs. But the outcome turned on the events of the third set.
After the Golden Falcons claimed the opening set, Georgian Court (11-9, 9-1) stormed back for a 25-7 Set 2 victory. In the middle of Set 3, Shebel served up three aces as part of a 8-0 run that turned a one-point Felician lead into a 17-8 advantage.
With the hosts still up, 19-12, a kill by GCU junior Tatiana Villariny-Rodriguez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Superior) touched off a run of five consecutive Lion points. With teams then trading rallies, Felician found itself up, 24-21. But the Lions saved three set points and claimed the last five points of the set for a 26-24 triumph.
Set four was tied on five occasions, the final time at 22-22. GCU received a kill from Jhoan Agosto Rivera (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Fountain Christian) and a Felician attack error to move within match point. A kill by Felician middle Kayla Gallagher (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) temporarily held off defeat, but the Golden Falcons attacked the next ball out of bounds and succumbed.
Both teams featured balanced offense and high-reward serving. Gallagher put down nine kills, and Felician senior Alexa Scrivanich (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) hit .438 with eight kills and four blocks. Golden Falcon sophomore libero Patrycja Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland) led all players on the day with 17 digs.
