Box Score BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Felician College was out-shot, 20-1, but did not allow a goal in the run of play in its 1-0 non-conference loss to host Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. Dowling (12-3-1) is ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region coaches' poll.
The match came one day after an idle Felician squad was eliminated from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff contention. On Tuesday, Chestnut Hill College defeated Goldey-Beacom College, 2-0, in a CACC match-up. The result knocked the Golden Falcons out of eighth place and ended their string of five consecutive CACC Tournament appearances. Following Wednesday's setback, Felician's 2013 season is complete with a won-lost-tied record of 4-9-5.
The Golden Falcons spent most of Wednesday's match on the defensive. They trailed, 11-0, in first-half shot attempts, and were not credited with a shot until the 68th minute, when an offering by sophomore midfielder Marissa Nieves (Brick, N.J.) was blocked by the Golden Lion defense. But Dowling had trouble finding the frame, and when it did, Felician sophomore goalkeeper Julia Sheridan (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) was up to the task.
Dowling's pressure finally paid off as time wound down in regulation. With 9:35 showing on the scoreboard clock, a Felician defender was whistled for a foul in the penalty area. The resulting penalty kick was converted by Golden Lion freshman midfielder Christina Cottone (Levittown, N.Y.), and the balance of the game was uneventful.
Sheridan finished the day with six saves. Dowling keeper Melissa Guglielmo (West Babylon, N.Y.) did not need to make a save in order to earn her eighth solo shutout of the season. Golden Lion sophomore Allie Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) led all players with six shots.
