Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Gallagher (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) hit .311 with 18 kills and a career-high seven blocks to lead Felician College to a 3-2 (25-15, 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over visiting Post University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (6-17, 6-12 CACC) tied the school record with its sixth victory of the season.
The win, combined with Bloomfield College's loss to Caldwell College, put the Golden Falcons in control of their playoff fate. Felician would earn a berth in next week's CACC Tournament if it can defeat Goldey-Beacom College in the regular-season finale on Saturday.
Felician played five sets for the fourth consecutive conference contest, splitting that stretch. The Golden Falcons also swept the two-match regular-season series from the Eagles (6-21, 6-12) for the first time in the 10-year history of their program.
When Felician defeated Post in three sets on Oct. 9, each side was missing a prominent starter due to injury. The Golden Falcons played without Gallagher, while Post was sans senior outside Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J./Union Catholic). Both players figured prominently in the re-match, with Wilman accumulating 18 kills and 16 digs while hitting .372.
Wednesday's deciding set was tied on five occasions, the final time at 7-7, before a kill by Felician's Olivia Emerson (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) led to the change-over. Felician then received a solo block from Emma Reijonen (Joensuu, Finland/Lyseo Joensuum) and a service ace by Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) for a three-point advantage.
The teams twice traded side-outs, with a Gallagher kill then putting Felician ahead, 13-9. Three consecutive Eagle points led to a Golden Falcon timeout. An Emerson kill left the Golden Falcons on the brink of victory, and Gallagher terminated the next rally with a solo block to end the match.
Emerson also finished with 18 kills and matched a career best with five blocks. Reijonen added 14 kills.
The Golden Falcons received double-doubles from both of their setters. Sophomore Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) amassed 30 assists, 20 digs and two aces, while classmate Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) contributed 17 assists and 14 digs. Libero Patrycja Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland/Lodz) topped the defense with 29 digs.
The Eagles got 17 kills, 14 digs and two aces from freshman outside Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn./Plainfield). Post setter Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia/No. 739) had 39 assists and 14 digs.
Felician also posted six wins in 2007, which was the last time it made the CACC playoffs.
