Volleyball Knocks Off Defending CACC Champion Dominican

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College women's volleyball team picked up its first victory of 2013 on Tuesday night, earning a come-from-behind 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-17, 15-5) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College at Job Gymnasium. Dominican (1-6, 1-1 CACC) was the 2012 conference champion.

After falling behind, two sets to one, Felician (1-4, 1-1) jumped out to a 16-4 Set 4 advantage and never trailed en route to knotting the match. Felician owned a slim 5-4 lead in the deciding set before reeling off seven consecutive points. A Domnican side-out cut the Golden Falcon edge to 12-5, but the hosts closed out the match when Olivia Emerson (Sparks, Nev./Reed) sandwiched a pair of kills around a Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) service ace.

Felician hit .227 in Sets 4 and 5 and a season-high .198 for the night. Tonia Ford (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) and Emerson put down three kills apiece in the fifth set, in which the Golden Falcons out-hit Dominican, .353-.000. The match lasted one hour, 49 minutes.

Emerson led the Felician offense with 14 kills, while sophomore libero Patrycja Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland) paced the defense with 23 digs, four assists and three aces. The Golden Falcons took advantage of 17 Dominican service errors, and out-dug the Chargers, 65-52.

Junior transfer Emma Reijonan (Joensuu, Finland/Lyseo Joensuum) picked up her first collegiate double-double, hitting .375 with 10 kills, 12 digs and three aces for Felician. Sophomore setter Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) also doubled up, posted 25 assists, 10 digs and five kills.

Dominican freshman outside McKenzie John (Lafayette, La./Lafayette) led all players with 22 kills and added 11 digs. Teammate Tori Dexter (Selah, Wash./Selah) amassed 11 kills with 14 digs and a pair of blocks.

Felician ended losing streaks of 19 consecutive matches overall, eight in a row at home, and nine straight to Dominican. The Golden Falcons' last victory of any kind came in Rutherford against Goldey-Beacom College on Sept. 22, 2012, also in five sets. Felician had not defeated the Chargers since Sept. 23, 2008.
