Tight Second-Set Win Lifts Rams Over Felician

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A 28-26 second set win keyed Philadelphia University's 3-0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-22) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. The win kept Philadelphia (12-12, 9-5 CACC) in the lead for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the CACC South Division.

Ram freshman middle Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) topped all players on the day with 14 kills. Philadelphia junior middle Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) hit .667 with 13 kills and five blocks. Senior middle Tonia Ford (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) hit .500 with 10 kills, nine digs and two blocks for Felician (5-15, 3-12).

The Rams never trailed in the first set, opening up leads of 10-2 and 17-9 and posting an attack percentage of .424 for the set. Set two appeared headed in the same direction when Philadelphia jumped out to a 9-4 lead.

But Felician closed its deficit to 11-9, and after the Rams went back ahead by five, the Golden Falcons came back again to tie the set at 18-18. The hosts briefly went ahead 23-22, on a block by Ford and Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers), but Hughes came up with consecutive kills to bring the visitors to match point. The Golden Falcons saved three set points before Justus recorded back-to-back kills for the 28-26 win. The set was tied on 11 occasions.

Felician did not go down quietly. The Golden Falcons led, 5-1, in the third set. After Philadelphia responded to move ahead, 13-10, Felician flipped the script for a 20-16 edge on a McKeever kill. Out of a timeout, the Rams produced six consecutive points, including two aces from Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley).

A Lyman service error left the Rams in the lead, 22-21. Philadelphia's Justus and Felician's Emma Reijonen (Joensuu, Finland/Lyseo Joensuun) traded kills, before a Golden Falcon error and a kill by Hughes ended the match.

Philadelphia hit .289 for the match and owned a 13-3 edge in aces. Ram senior Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C.) had seven kills, and Lyman finished with five kills, nine digs and six aces.

Felician freshman Sally Taylor (San Diego, Cailf./SDCE) amassed nine kills and a match-high 17 digs. Reijonen ended up with eight kills.
