Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College senior goalkeeper Julia Sheridan (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Community) saved a free kick in the 90th minute to preserve her team's 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Caldwell University on Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The match completed the 2015 regular season for both schools.
The solo shutout was the 10th of Sheridan's career, making her only the second Felician female keeper to reach that milestone. Daniela Videira had 19 from 2000-03. Sheridan broke a tie with Elaine Turowski (1998-2000) for second place on the Golden Falcons' all-time shutout list.
Prior to the game, Felician celebrated Senior Day. Sheridan, defender/midfielder Christen McNair (Iselin, N.J./JFK Memorial), midfielder Marissa Nieves (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), and team manager Michelle Layton (Avenel, N.J./Colonia) were honored.
Both Felician (7-9, 7-5 CACC) and Caldwell will advance to the CACC playoffs. In Tuesday's quarterfinals, the No. 7 seed Golden Falcons will travel to No. 2 seed Holy Family University, and the No. 5 seed Cougars (9-8-1, 8-3-1) will be entertained by No. 4 seed Wilmington (Del.) University.
Offensive opportunities were scarce for both sides in the opening 45 minutes on Saturday. Caldwell, which came up empty on the half's only two corner kicks, held a 2-1 advantage in shots. An offering by Cougar senior Sarina Soriano (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) bounced off the right goalpost in the 21st minute.
In the fourth minute of period two, Felician earned a corner kick. Nieves' kick was deflected to sophomore Danielle Stoll (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who fired off a shot in traffic. The ball was blocked by a Caldwell defender, but she was whistled for a handball well inside the 18-yard box. Junor Azra Buljko (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) was entrusted with the ensuing penalty kick, which she converted at 48:32. It was Buljko's third goal of the season.
Cougar freshman keeper Mary Kanzler (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) made a diving stop against Buljko in the 67th minute to keep her team within one goal. Two of the three shots Caldwell got off in the second half came on restarts, including an attempt by Jessica Garretson (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) during the final minute which Sheridan caught for her only save.
The Golden Falcons completed the day with slight edges of 7-5 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks. Caldwell's Soriano and Felician's Nieves shared match-high honors with three shots apiece. Kanzler was credited with three saves.
