Volleyball Stays Alive In Playoff Hunt, Enjoys Record-Setting Night

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team kept its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff hopes alive with a record-setting 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) CACC victory over visiting Caldwell University on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (7-23, 5-13 CACC) broke a 15-match losing streak to Caldwell, defeating the Cougars for the first time since 2007.

Golden Falcon senior libero Pati Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland/SMS Beach Volleyball) set a Felician record with 37 digs. The previous mark was held by Erica Moore, who had 35 in an Oct. 6, 2007, match at Goldey-Beacom College. The Golden Falcons also set team standards for kills (66) and assists (63) in a four-set match.

Additionally, Felician established the program record for victories in a season. The Golden Falcons had won six matches in 2007 and 2013.

Tuesday's win, combined with Post University's victory at Dominican (N.Y.) College, brought Felician to within one game of Dominican for fourth place in the CACC North Division, and the division's final playoff berth. Each team plays its final regular season match on Saturday. Should the teams tie in the standings, the Golden Falcons would own the tiebreaker advantage due to tonight's victory.

Felician recovered from an early 9-5 deficit in Set 1. With the set tied, 15-15, the hosts took control by winning eight of the next nine rallies. The Golden Falcons then hit .417 with 20 kills in claiming Set 2 and taking a 2-0 lead.

Set 3 featured 10 ties, the last time at 22-22, before Caldwell won the final three points to extend the match. With the fourth set tied, 16-16, the Golden Falcons scored four points in a row. When the Cougars pulled to within 22-21, a Kristen Keller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) kills kept Felician in the lead. After a Caldwell side-out, an errant Cougar serve and a kill by Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) ended the match in the Golden Falcons' favor.

Calero put down 23 kills, a high for any Golden Falcon this season, and added 15 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Shannon Hood (East Orange, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy) had 13 kills, and senior setter Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) totaled eight kills, 50 assists, 16 digs, four blocks and four aces. Keller had seven kills and a .700 attack percentage.

McKeever became the third player in the 12-year history of the Felician program to reach 100 career aces. She joined Megan Delamater (105, 2008-11) and teammate and all-time leader Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) (116).

Sophomore outside hitter Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha) paced Caldwell (20-11, 12-6) with 15 kills and 10 digs while hitting .324.

Felician travels to Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday. Dominican plays at Bloomfield College. Both contests start at 1 p.m.
