Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Despite 13 kills and 10 digs from freshman outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif.), the Felician University women's volleyball team was defeated, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) by host Concordia (N.Y.) College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Meyer Athletic Center.
The match marked the conclusion of the 2015 season for both schools. Felician (7-24, 5-14 CACC) fell one game short of Dominican (N.Y.) College (6-25, 6-13) for fourth place in the CACC North Division and the division's final league playoff berth.
Concordia (4-16, 4-15) posted a .231 team attack percentage for the afternoon. Clipper sophomore outside Sydney Darden (Marietta, Ga.) came off the bench to hit .483 and lead all players with 17 kills.
Concordia never trailed in either of the first two sets. Felician came all the way back from a 15-6 Set 1 deficit to even the set at 20-20, only to see the Clippers win the next four rallies. The Golden Falcons saved two set points before Darden put down a kill to give the hosts a 25-22 victory and a 1-0 lead.
In Set 2, Concordia turned a 3-3 tie into a 7-3 advantage and never trailed again. The visitors came as close as 9-8 before the Clippers gradually pulled away. With the score 21-19, Concordia won three consecutive points, including kills from Darden and Michelle Klimas (Thornwood, N.Y.), to key the 25-20 win.
The third set unfolded similarly, with Concordia preventing the Golden Falcons from extending the match. The set was even, 9-9, before the Clippers won the next four points. Felician got back to 16-16, but consecutive Darden kills put Concordia ahead to stay. Leading 21-18, the Clippers were able to alternate side-outs with Felician for the balance of the set to claim the victory.
Klimas finished with seven kills and three aces for Concordia. Felician received six kills from sophomore Shannon Hood (East Orange, N.J.), while freshman Carmen Shaw (Garderville, Nev.) had five kills and three blocks.)
