Volleyball Sees Playoff Hopes Dim After Yielding Comeback To Dominican

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Dominican (N.Y.) College erased a two-set deficit to earn a 3-2 (24-26, 17-25, 28-26, 26-24, 15-12) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Dominican (5-23, 5-11 CACC) trailed by at least four points in each of the final three sets.

Freshman middle blocker Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) led Felician with 12 kills. Classmate Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) posted 10 kills, 12 digs and four service aces. Dominican junior middle Cortney Yeoman (Glenn Dale, Md./St. John's College HS) hit .410 with 17 kills and four blocks.

The Golden Falcons (5-23, 3-13) fell two games behind Dominican, with three remaining, for fourth place in the CACC North Division and the final playoff spot from the division that comes with it.

Set 1 featured 16 ties and 12 lead changes before Felician used a pair of attack errors by the Chargers to pull away from a 24-24 draw and claim the set. The Golden Falcons' Set 2 victory was keyed by a run of five points with senior defensive specialist Pati Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland/SMS Beach Volleyball) serving. Felician turned an 8-8 tie into a five-point lead and never trailed again.

Felician led, 21-16, in Set 3 before the Chargers won four consecutive rallies, receiving two kills each from Yeoman and Kelly Murphy (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen). Dominican then saved four match points, extended the set to extra points before three consecutive errors by the Golden Falcons, one on serve and two on the attack, ended the set and let the visitors back in the match.

A similar script was acted out in the fourth set. The hosts led, 20-14, only to see Dominican come back to lead, 24-23. A kill from senior Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) saved one set point against Felician, but the Golden Falcons then committed consecutive attack errors, setting up a deciding set.

Felician led, 8-4, at the fifth-set changeover. Still trailing, 9-6, the Chargers rattled off four points in a row to take the lead. The Golden Falcons used a kill by Calero to move ahead, 11-10, but Dominican captured the next three rallies. Felician pulled to within 13-12 on a Shaw kill, but kills by Kera Dexter (Selah, Wash./Selah) and Ashley Joyner (Edgewood, Md./Joppatown) ended the match two hours, 10 minutes, after the first service.

Dexter finished with 14 kills, 10 digs and three aces and Murphy amassed 12 kills and 21 digs for the Chargers. Dominican setter Amanda Hallstein (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) finished with seven kills, 48 assists and 18 digs. McKeever turned in eight kills, 33 assists and 12 digs and Shannon Hood (East Orange, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy) had seven kills and seven blocks for the Golden Falcons.

The teams combined for 16 aces but also committed a total of 29 service errors.

Felician was holding its first home athletics event since being accorded University status on Monday. To celebrate, Felician president Dr. Anne M. Prisco introduced the starting line-ups before the match.
