Box Score NEWARK, Del. – Wilmington (Del.) University used a tie-breaking goal with 42 seconds remaining in the first half to earn a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Felician College on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The second half was scoreless despite Felician's 13-5 shot advantage. The Golden Falcons' best chance at the equalizer came in the 58th minute, when, on the counter-attack, sophomore Danielle Stoll (Wanaque, N.J.) got an open look at the goal from in front. But Wilmington sophomore goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams (Middletown, Del.) leapt to get one hand on the ball and bat it over the crossbar. Felician was able to create another opportunity on the ensuing corner kick, but a Mikaylah Davies (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) header missed high.
Wilmington (2-2, 2-1 CACC) was the first team on the scoreboard when sophomore Chandler Lages (Jackson, N.J.) finished from the middle of the 18-yard box at the 27:04 mark. But the Golden Falcons tied the score only 20 seconds later. Senior Marissa Nieves (Brick, N.J.) received the kickoff, dribbled down the right flank, and found Stoll, who put a shot inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
The eventual game-winner for the Wildcats came from sophomore Loran Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J.). As the first half game clock wound under one minute, Wyrough received a through-ball from freshman Rebecca Dolhansky (Blackwood, N.J.) which freed her 1 v. 1 with Felician senior keeper Julia Sheridan (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).
Wyrough finished with a goal and an assist while leading the Wildcats with five shots. Stoll got off six shots for the Golden Falcons (1-3, 1-1). Felician ended the day with the better numbers in shots (23-14) and corner kicks (7-1). Both Sheridan and Williams completed the afternoon with 10 saves.
Felician plays a make-up game on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Goldey-Beacom College at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The match becomes the Golden Falcons' home opener.
