Volleyball Takes Set From Bridgeport Before Bowing

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team won the second set from 2015 East Coast Conference champion University of Bridgeport, but the visiting Purple Knights rebounded for a 3-1 (25-7, 23-25, 25-15, 25-11) non-conference victory on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium.

Bridgeport (5-7) was the runner-up in the NCAA Division II East Region a year ago.

Sophomore outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) led Felician (0-14) with seven kills and added nine digs. Bridgeport freshman Morgan Knight (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) topped all players with 13 kills.

The Purple Knights hit .356 for the night, and held Felician to an .037 attack percentage. Bridgeport also came up with 12 service aces.

Bridgeport hit .619 in its Set 1 victory. But in the second set, the teams were within one point of each other until Felician ran off five consecutive points to turn a one-point deficit into a 13-9 lead. The Golden Falcons maintained an edge of between two and five points, reaching a 24-20 advantage on a kill by Hannah Skendziel (Tampa, Fla./Freedom). The Purple Knights saved three set points before a Calero kill evened the match at one set apiece.

Bridgeport righted itself midway through the third set. Leading 10-9, the visitors won five straight rallies. The Purple Knights pulled away for a 10-point victory, hitting .522 for the set. Bridgeport continued the momentum into Set 4, jumping out to a 9-3 lead and never trailing. Ahead 15-9, Bridgeport scored seven points in a row, and eventually wrapped up the match on a kill by Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Trinity Valley JC).

Bridgeport freshman Sheri Middleton (Humbolt, Kan./Fort Scott CC) posted 10 kills and Cruz finished with seven kills, 15 digs and six aces. Skendziel had six kills, and Amanda Coccia (Rahway, N.J./Roselle Catholic) led the Golden Falcons with 14 digs.

The Golden Falcons host another ECC foe, Molloy College, on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Rutherford.
