First-Half Wilmington Goal Holds Up In 1-0 Women's Soccer Loss

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – In a match which saw the defenses take center stage, a 32nd minute Wilmington (Del.) University goal held up as the game-winner as the Wildcats defeated host Felician University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer action on Saturday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

The offenses were rarely dangerous on the night, having trouble connecting on passes amid the intermittent, sometimes heavy rain that fell during the game. When either team was able to put an opportunity together, the opposing back line was usually on the spot to break it up. In all, the teams got off just seven shots, including only two for the triumphant visitors.

Wilmington (7-5, 6-2 CACC) came close to the lead on its first offering of the night, when a header by Ashley Cafarella (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) bounded off the top of the crossbar before going over the net in the 27th minute. Not long thereafter, the Wildcats cashed in.

A Wilmington corner kick was initially cleared by the Felician defense. However, Wildcats sophomore Rebecca Dolhansky (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) who took the kick, retreated to recover the ball. She dribbled ahead and sent a hard diagonal cross which the goalkeeper was only able to get her fingertips on. The ball found the head of junior Loran Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) who finished inside the far post for her seventh marker of the season.

Felician's best chance to equalize came on its only corner kick of the night. In the 50th minute, Azra Buljko (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) got her head on a Danielle Stoll (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) kick, but the ball hit the crossbar. Wilmington junior keeper Kierstyn Williams (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) made three late-game saves to preserve the shutout.

Buljko finished with four of the Golden Falcons' five shots.

Felician continues its homestand when it entertains Concordia (N.Y.) College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Lyndhurst.
