Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University amassed a 14-12 shots advantage but could not break through in the scoring column in its 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer loss to visiting Georgian Court University on Saturday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician was playing its 2016 home opener.
Georgian Court (3-2, 3-0 CACC) was the 2015 CACC regular-season champion and was chosen for first place in the 2016 league preseason coaches' poll.
The Lions broke through late in an evenly-played first half. In the 37th minute, senior Melinda MacNeil (Tuckerton, N.J./Pineland Regional) lined up for a corner kick from the right side. As both teams converged and tried to place a head on the high-arching kick, it took a turn and bent directly into the upper left corner of the net. GCU carried the 1-0 lead, and a slim 6-5 shots edge, into halftime.
Shortly after a scoring opportunity was whistled for offside, the visitors struck again with 20:04 remaining in regulation. Graduate student Tuere Chisholm-Thomas (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) collected a diagonal pass from teammate Anissia Fucci (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township), dribbled to about 14 yards away and sent a high shot across the goal mouth to the upper right.
The Golden Falcons (1-3, 0-1) put five of their 14 shots on goal, and all were saved by Lion goalkeeper Natalie Axelsson (Galloway, N.J./Absegami). Bjonda Ademi (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) stopped six shots for Felician.
Felician's Amanda Nowak (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) got off a game high six shots. Felician also led the day in corner kick opportunities, 5-4. Chisholm-Thomas topped GCU with four shot attempts.
