Wilmington Volleyball Holds Off Felician In Four Sets

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Wilmington (Del.) University avoided a deciding set by coming back from an 18-14 fourth-set deficit to clinch a 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 19-25, 25-20) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician University on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician (0-8, 0-3 CACC) was playing its 2016 home opener.

Golden Falcon sophomore middle blocker Hannah Skendziel (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) led all players with 12 kills and added four blocks. Skendziel had a .304 attack percentage for the day. Felician received 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks from sophomore outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest). Junior Eile Harris (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) topped Wilmington with 10 kills and six blocks.

The Wildcats (4-6, 1-0) ran off eight consecutive points midway through Set 1 to turn a 10-6 deficit into a four-point lead. Rebecca Rawlinson (Cockeysville, Md.) had a kill and two service aces during the spurt. Wilmington extended its edge to 22-15 and held on to capture the set. The visitors then got out to a 15-9 edge and pulled away to claim Set 2.

Felician extended the match by winning six consecutive rallies to move ahead 15-7 in the third set. The Golden Falcons saw Wilmington close an 18-10 deficit to 22-18 before kills by Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) closed the set.

The hosts carried the momentum into Set 4, taking an early 6-2 advantage. From a 12-12 tie, Felician went ahead 18-14, but the Wildcats won 11 of the final 13 points, including the last five, to take the match.

Felician freshman setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif/Murrieta Mesa) amassed 26 assists and 11 digs in three sets. Shaw finished with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks, and Vodrazka added six kills and five blocks. Wilmington libero Jenna Brown (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) picked up a match-high 24 digs.
