Nyack Volleyball Edges Felician In Well-Played Fifth Set

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Nyack College used 13 kills and two service aces to score all of its fifth-set points and earn a 3-2 (27-29, 25-9, 25-17, 19-25, 15-12) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium.

Nyack (8-16, 6-4) CACC received a pair of standout individual performances in the victory. Freshman middle blocker/opposite hitter Kyra Zuhlke (Johnstown, Colo./Resurrection Christian) hit .531 and produced match highs of 20 kills and eight blocks. Meanwhile, Warrior freshman setter/opposite hitter Rachel Medin (San Diego, Calif./Del Norte) hung a triple-double on the Golden Falcons. Medin amassed 15 kills, 33 assists, 11 digs, and four aces.

Freshman middle blocker/opposite hitter Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) hit .417 and led Felician (2-13, 1-9) with a season-high 14 kills. Golden Falcon sophomore setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murietta Mesa) accumulated 38 assists, 18 digs and four blocks.

Felician dropped the deciding set despite hitting .421 and not committing an attack error. The hosts tallied Set 5's first three points, but Nyack recovered for a 5-4 lead and never trailed again. With the set even, 6-6, the Warriors took the lead for good by winning three consecutive rallies.

With her team ahead, 9-8, Medin came up with back-to-back kills to restore the three-point edge. The teams alternated side-outs the rest of the way, with the Golden Falcons saving one set point before a Zuhlke kill ended the match.

Set 1 featured 10 ties and five lead changes, and was 28 minutes in duration, before Felician came out on top. The Golden Falcons could not capitalize on the early advantage however, allowing the Warriors to jump ahead, 8-1, in Set 2. Felician also never led in the third set, seeing a 9-7 deficit quickly turn into 18-12. Felician rebounded to force the deciding set by pulling away from a 13-13 Set 4 tie.

Junior Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) had 12 kills and 21 digs and sophomore Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) a season-high 11 kills for Felician. Golden Falcon sophomore libero Lauren Mack (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led all players with a career-best 26 digs and added six assists. Senior Alexus Winters (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) totaled 16 kills, 17 digs and three aces for Nyack.

The Warriors held statistical advantages of 14-5 in aces and 9-7 in blocks. The match lasted 1 hour, 56 minutes.

Felician fell to 0-3 in five-set matches this season, all at home. The Golden Falcons have dropped seven straight deciding sets since defeating Nyack on Oct. 3, 2014.

The Golden Falcons host a tri-match on Saturday with CACC foe Chestnut Hill College and non-league opponent Southern Connecticut State University. Match action begins at noon.
