Volleyball Is Swept Twice In Home Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium and lost both of its matches, 3-0. The Golden Falcons began the day with a 25-23, 25-20, 26-24 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setback to Chestnut Hill College, and concluded the event by falling, 25-11, 25-19, 25-23, to Southern Connecticut State University in non-conference action.

In between, Southern Connecticut State topped the Griffins, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-12).

All three sets for the Golden Falcons against Chestnut Hill (6-17, 5-6 CACC) seemed to follow a similar script. Felician would fall behind in the middle stages of the set, and make a comeback that would fall just short. For instance, in Set 1, CHC led by as much as 16-11, only to see the Golden Falcons pull to within 20-19.  The Griffins rebounded to move back on top 23-20 and survived.

The visitors captured seven consecutive rallies in the second set for an 18-11 edge. Felician came within 21-19 and 22-20 but could not get over the hump. In Set 3, CHC took a 15-9 lead, saw the Golden Falcons save three set points in tying at 24-24, but completed the victory on a Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz./Dobson) kill and an ace by Janie Green (Hayes, Va./Gloucester).

Chestnut Hill freshman middle hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Plymouth Whitemarsh) led all players with 12 kills. Gelfan hit .318 with nine kills. Junior outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) had nine kills and 11 digs for Felician, and freshman middle blocker Kate Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) added seven kills and four blocks.

The Golden Falcons (2-15, 1-10) did not hold a lead in either of the first two sets against Southern Connecticut (16-5). The Owls scored the first six points of the match, and led 13-3 en route to their Set 1 victory. SCSU saw a 14-8 second set bulge shrink to 20-18, but righted itself by tallying the final four points of the set.

Felician appeared on its way to extending the match when it led, 19-11, in Set 3 and forced the Owls to use both of their timeouts. But the Golden Falcons did not score a service point the rest of the way. A string of four SCSU points made the score 19-15. Clinging to that same margin at 22-18, Felician saw SCSU run off five points in a row to take the lead, including two aces by Anna Venard (Thornton, Colo./Thornton). A Calero kill tied the set at 23-23, but two attack errors by the hosts handed the victory to the Owls.

Sophomore Jillian Chambers (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) led Southern Connecticut with nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Junior Alyssa Gage (Beverly Hills, Fla./Seven Rivers Christian) hit .700 with seven kills and three blocks. Calero turned in eight kills and 13 digs and sophomore Lauren Mack (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) also had 13 digs for Felician. Golden Falcon sophomore setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murietta Mesa) totaled 22 assists, three aces and three blocks.

Felician visits Bloomfield College on Tuesday, looking to avenge a five-set CACC loss from Sept. 22.
