Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University women's soccer team was unable to equalize after falling behind by two goals, eventually losing, 2-1, to visiting Caldwell University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The game marked the 2017 regular season finale for both schools.
Caldwell (8-8-1, 7-4-1 CACC) entered the day locked into the No. 6 seed in next week's eight-team CACC Championship tournament. Felician, meanwhile, could have secured the No. 8 seed with a victory or a draw on Wednesday, but has not been eliminated from contention.
Bloomfield College (5-10, 3-8) travels to Post University on Thursday for a 3 p.m. make-up game. With a win, Bloomfield would eclipse Felician (5-10-1, 4-8) for the final spot in the playoffs via tiebreaker. A Post victory or a tie on Thursday would hand the No. 8 seed to the Golden Falcons.
On Wednesday, the Cougars jumped on top in the 10th minute of play. A shot by Caldwell freshman Teaghan Darling (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) was saved by Felician freshman goalkeeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township), but the impetus of the shot carried the ball past the end line for a corner kick.
Meghan Grundhauser (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) launched a ball from the corner that connected with the head of Cougar junior Stephanie Faust (Grundy Center, Iowa/Indian Hills CC). Nine minutes, 17 seconds into the match, Faust finished to give the visitors the lead.
Felician had limited opportunities in the first half, and Caldwell carried the 1-0 edge into halftime. Caldwell struck again in the 10th minute of the second half, with Grundhauser getting free in front of the net and knocking in a cross from Jessica LaConde (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina).
With 16:54 remaining, the Golden Falcons cut their deficit in half. Amanda Nowak (Kolbuszowa, Poland/Lyndhurst [N.J.]) played a high cross into the middle of the 18-yard box which fellow senior Katina Kozlowski (Milton, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) was able to head into the net. But chances to tie the score were scarce, the best coming with fewer than two minutes to play, when a Katie Paz (Bethpage, N.Y./Island Trees) header went wide.
Felician was limited to six shots, including just two on goal. Caldwell accumulated a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Darling led all players with four shot attempts. Kazenmayer finished with seven saves.
