Volleyball Breaks Long Home Skid -- Then Wins Again

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team won at home for the first time this season when it earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-13) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Dominican (N.Y.) College in the front end of a Division-II tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Later on Saturday, Felician captured a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-11) non-league triumph over The Lincoln (Pa.) University.

The Golden Falcons' service game played a key role in their pair of wins. On the day, Felician produced 25 aces in the six sets, as compared to nine service errors. It allowed its opponents only five aces for the afternoon. Sophomore setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murieta Mesa) topped the hosts with seven aces. Against Lincoln, the Golden Falcons, behind six from sophomore libero Lauren Mack (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) came up with 16 aces, one shy of the school record.

Saturday marked just the second time in the 14-year history of the Felician program that the Golden Falcons swept both ends of a tri-match. On Sept. 20, 2014, Felician defeated Goldey-Beacom College and Bowie State University, also in Rutherford.

The victory over Dominican snapped a 10-match losing streak for the Golden Falcons. It was also Felician's first home win since Nov. 10, 2015, against Caldwell University, ending a string of 20 consecutive home setbacks.

Greek guided the Felician offense to a season-best .298 attack percentage against Dominican, personally posting four kills, 27 assists, six digs and three aces. Her favorite target was freshman Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani), who led all players in the match with 12 kills.

Junior Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) hit .444 with nine kills and 12 digs and freshman Kate Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) hit .615 with eight kills for Felician. Charger sophomore Gabrielle Napoleon (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) hit .400 with seven kills.

A few hours after needing 56 minutes to top Dominican, the Golden Falcons got past Lincoln (4-17) in 57. The match started with Felician (4-18, 2-13 CACC) scoring the first five points, including two aces from Greek, and ended with a kill by 5-foot-4 Amanda Coccia (Rahway, N.J./Roselle Catholic), who was pressed into service at outside hitter due to team injuries.

Calero turned in 10 kills, and Felician junior Baylei Furman (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Moanalua) hit .421 with nine kills. Greek amassed 28 assists, seven digs and four aces for the Golden Falcons, who received 12 digs, six aces and three assists from Mack. Lion junior Aubury Coleman (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) picked up 10 kills and three blocks.

In the day's middle match, Dominican (1-25, 0-14) picked up its first win of 2017, downing the Lions, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21).

Felician sponsored "Dig Pink" Day on Saturday to raise funds for the Side-Out Foundation to fight breast cancer. Donations can still be made in the name of Felician University Women's Volleyball at https://giving.side-out.org/campaigns/13712.

The Golden Falcons travel to Post University on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match in Waterbury, Conn.
