Freshman Sloan Sparks Volleyball To Key CACC Victory

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Freshman outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) produced a season-high 11 kills to spark the Felician University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

The victory lifted Felician (9-16, 5-10 CACC) a half-game ahead of Bloomfield (4-21, 4-10) for fourth place in the CACC North Division. At season's end, the top four teams from each division reach the conference playoffs. The Golden Falcons are two games up on sixth-place Dominican (N.Y.) College, and meet the Chargers on Tuesday, the first of Felician's four CACC matches remaining.

Saturday's match was sloppy at times, with the sides combining for 58 attack errors (30-28 Felician) and 20 service errors (12-8 Bloomfield). Felician freshman outside Kahea Aea (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehemeha) led all players with a season-high 19 kills and added nine digs.

Sloan was making just her fourth start of the season. In the first two sets, she had eight kills, already a season-best, and hit .467 to help lead the hosts to a 2-0 lead.

Determined to extend the match, the Bears extended a 10-9 Set 3 lead to 19-13. The Golden Falcons took advantage of some erratic Bloomfield offense to come all the way back and tie the set at 23-23. Junior Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, Texas/Canutillo) put Bloomfield back on top with a kill, and a Felician timeout was to no avail as it committed an error to hand the visitors the set.

Bloomfield's early 6-2 edge was the largest advantage for either team in Set 4. Still trailing, 13-10, Felician ran off four consecutive rallies to assume a brief lead. The set was tied 14-14, 16-16, and finally at 20-20 before a Bear service error and an Aea ace gave the Golden Falcons the opening they needed. Ahead 24-23, Felician gained a final side-out on a Sloan kill to win the match.

Felician junior setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murietta Mesa) turned in a season-high 37 assists and nine digs. Freshman libero Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha) paced the Golden Falcon defense with 19 digs.

Quintanar (10 digs, three aces) and freshman Destiny King (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) (five blocks) recorded 12 kills each for Bloomfield. Bear sophomore libero Junelly Marrero (Las Vegas, Puerto Rico/Academia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo), the CACC's leader in digs per set, totaled 24 digs, and junior setter Juliet Tygret had 33 assists, 11 digs and three aces.

The Golden Falcons travel to Dominican for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday in Orangeburg, N.Y.
