Men's Basketball Never Recovers From Slow Start Versus Jefferson

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University fell behind, 32-9, nearly 10 minutes into its 87-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball loss to the visiting Jefferson Rams on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Felician, which never led, was down by as many as 26 points in the first half. The Golden Falcons (3-8, 1-3 CACC) trailed, 52-29, at halftime and 70-42 with 13 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in regulation time. Felician outscored the Rams, 12-4, in the final 4 ½ minutes to salvage the final margin, its smallest deficit of the second half.

Each team placed five scorers in double figures. Freshman Dee-End McRae (Irvington, N.J./Newark Central) and junior transfer Isiah Hinton-Gray (Brooklyn, N.Y./William Allen [Pa.]) came off the Felician bench to each record their first "double-double" as Golden Falcons. McRae turned in a team-high 13 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes, while Hinton-Gray recorded 10 points and a game-high 12 boards in 17 minutes.

Jefferson (8-6, 3-2) received 32 points from sophomore guard Alexander Gorton (Jonesboro, Ark./Valley View). Playing the entire 40 minutes, Gorton shot 11 for 21 from the field, including 5 of 10 from three-point range, and went 5 for 6 at the foul line. Junior teammate DeVaughn Mallory (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) amassed 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rams shot 58 percent from the floor in the opening period and held Felician to a 30-percent figure. Mallory had already accumulated 18 points and nine boards by the time the halftime buzzer sounded. The Golden Falcons, who wasted a 48-37 rebounding advantage, made only 1 of 13 attempts from behind the three-point arc for the day.

Felician received 12 points, five rebounds and four assists from freshman swingman Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth). Junior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) scored 11 points with five rebounds, and freshman Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) netted 10 points.

Junior point guard Kylan Guerra (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) spearheaded the Jefferson offense with 11 points and nine assists.

Felician travels to Bronxville, N.Y., on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. CACC tilt against Concordia (N.Y.) College. It will mark the first road game for the Golden Falcons since Dec. 6.
