WATERTOWN, Conn. – The Felician University men's golf team improved 24 strokes in a 24-hour period to finish in 11th place at the Eagles Invitational, hosted by Post University on Monday and Tuesday at the Watertown Golf Club.
Sophomore Gonzalo Maldonado Felices (Almeria, Spain/Stella Maris) turned in Felician's top individual performance for the tournament. The par-71 course laid out at 6,638 yards. Maldonado Felices shot 79 in Monday's round before carding a 73 on Tuesday for a 10-over-par tournament score of 152. He tied for 22nd place out of 95 entrants.
Maldonado Felices' 79 tied with senior Jake Storako (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) for the Golden Falcons' best round on Day 1. Felician struggled to a team score of 335 and sat in 12th place in the 14-school field after Monday's play. But the Golden Falcons came up with a 311 on Tuesday to pass Adelphi University and stay ahead of Saint Anselm College and American International College. Felician's total score of 646 was six strokes behind 10th-place Saint Michael's College.
Storako was the only other Felician player to finish in the top half of the field. His 79-77—156 tied for 38th place. Senior Christian Lauchaire (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) matched Storako's 77 on Tuesday but was coming off an opening performance of 84. His 161 tied for 61st.
Junior Prince Sukklabsawan (Si Racha, Thailand/Heritage Academy [S.C.]) shot 93-84—177. Classmate Adrian Mayorga (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) produced a season-best 102 on Monday and followed with 103.
Felician was fourth out of four Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference members in attendance.
Recently-crowned Northeast 10 Conference champion Assumption College won the tournament with 291-300-591 (+23), four shots ahead of runner-up Le Moyne College. Assumption senior Mark Bryant was the medalist. He was the only player to break par, shooting 72-69—141.
Felician has a quick turnaround before playing in the Le Moyne Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Cicero, N.Y.
