Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University hit .384 and held visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College to a negative team attack percentage during its 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-8) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over the Chargers on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium.
In reaching a .500 winning percentage at the latest point in a season in the 16-year history of its program, Felician (12-12, 10-1) guaranteed itself its first winning record in conference play. The Golden Falcons remained three games ahead of idle Caldwell University for first place in the CACC North Division with eight remaining.
The .384 attack percentage for Felician consisted of 35 kills and seven errors on 73 total attempts. The Golden Falcons finished four percentage points shy of the school record in that category. On Oct. 11, 2007, they hit .388 in a 3-0 victory over Caldwell.
Freshman setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michael's HS) guided the Felician offense to the near-record. In the process, she amassed three kills, 29 assists, nine digs and a season-high five service aces. Her top target was senior opposite hitter Kali Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne), who totaled nine kills and six blocks.
Tuesday's match lasted just 55 minutes. The hosts jumped out to a 14-5 lead in Set 1. Ahead 19-11, Felician kept up the pressure, capturing six of the next seven points, including two kills and an ace from junior Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani), to exit the set victorious.
The Golden Falcons again started fast in Set 2, moving ahead, 15-2. A suddenly sloppy Felician service game and a pair of kills from Dominican senior captain Deanna Knopf (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) pulled the Chargers to within 18-8, but the set never became closer.
Felician failed to entertain any thought of a Charger comeback. With Martinez serving, the Golden Falcons recorded the first 10 points of Set 3. Martinez had a kill, two aces and three assists during the spurt. Dominican recovered for an 18-8 deficit, only to see Felician win the final seven rallies of the night.
Knopf led Dominican (0-17, 0-11) with nine kills and nine digs. Senior Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) finished with eight kills for Felician, and classmate Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas/Paris) turned in five kills (on six attempts) and six blocks.
Felician has won its last six meetings with the Chargers. The Golden Falcons are also riding a seven-match home win streak dating back to last season.
Felician entertains Post University on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Rutherford.
