Division Champions!! Volleyball Knocks Off Jefferson For Crown

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team won the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division regular-season championship by defeating the host Jefferson Rams, 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. The match marked the end of regular-season competition for both schools.

Felician (15-17, 13-6) entered the day with a one-game lead over Caldwell University in the division. With Caldwell's home match against Wilmington (Del.) University in progress, the Golden Falcons completed the first victory over Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University) in the 16-year history of their program. Felician had been 0-16 versus the Rams, only once winning a set.

Wilmington (20-13, 12-7), which was locked into the CACC South Division's No. 4 seed, came back to complete a 3-2 win over Caldwell (13-18, 11-8). Wilmington will travel to Felician for a quarterfinal match in the CACC Championship tournament on Tuesday, November 19, at 6 p.m. More details will be released in the coming days.

Felician's division title is the first in program history. The Golden Falcons had never finished better than fourth in the division. Thus, Tuesday's contest will mark their first-ever home playoff match.

Jefferson (17-11, 12-7) is ranked No. 10 in the most recent NCAA Committee Division II East Region poll. The Rams are the South's No. 3 seed and will travel to Caldwell for Tuesday's quarterfinals.

On Saturday, Felician amassed edges of 50-39 in kills, .146-.029 in attack percentage, and 89-73 in digs. Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J.) paced the Golden Falcons with 17 kills and 13 digs. Felician senior outside Raamiah Edwards (Bloomfield, N.J.) garnered 14 kills and nine digs. Junior outside Lauren Kloos (Kings Park, N.Y.) led Jefferson with 12 kiss and added nine digs.

Felician was never a factor in the opening set, quickly falling behind, 19-6, in its eventual nine-point loss. But the visitors flipped the script in Set 2. Edwards picked up four early kills to help the Golden Falcons take a 10-2 lead, and a pair of service aces from sophomore Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii) jumpstarted another run which left Felician ahead, 20-7. The set grew interesting when, trailing, 23-10, Jefferson won nine consecutive points, but a service error and an Edwards kill eventually did the Rams in.

After another quick start in the third, the Golden Falcons were better finishers, and enjoyed a lopsided win to move ahead in the match. But trailing, 12-6, in Set 4, Jefferson ran off eight consecutive points, including three on Cassandra Hickman (Washington Township, N.J.) kills. The set moved to 19-19 before Felician pulled away, winning five rallies in a row. A Jefferson block paused the celebration, but Katie Asbery's (Mililani, Hawaii) kill gave the Golden Falcons the victory and the division title.

Jefferson libero Alexis Leddy (Reading, Pa.) had 20 digs, and became the Rams' career leader in that category with 1,574.

For Felician, Asbery totaled seven kills and four blocks and Kali Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J.) finished with six kills, eight digs and three blocks. Gallagher ended up with 28 digs, six assists and three aces from her libero position and Golden Falcon freshman setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) amassed 37 assists and 12 digs.
