Griffins Come Back To Down Women's Soccer During Second Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Chestnut Hill College scored with one minute, 47 seconds, remaining in the second overtime period to earn a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Felician University on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field #1.

The match ended on a successful direct kick by Chestnut Hill freshman Abigail Galaska (Philadelphia, Pa.). Felician sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Lambertino (Hammonton, N.J.) had made two earlier saves in extra time, but was rendered helpless as Galaska's strike from the top of and just outside the 18-yard box darted for the upper right corner of the net.

Felician sophomore Lindsay Whaley (Subic Bay, Philippines) opened the scoring on a takeaway and one-timer mid-way through the first half. Shortly thereafter, CHC keeper Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) made a fingertip save of a shot by Golden Falcon junior Aroa Herrero Nieto (Almeria, Spain), but the visitors carried the 1-0 edge into halftime.

The Griffins, however, found the equalizer just 42 seconds into period two off the foot of Maddie Jimenez (Bensalem, Pa.). Galaska assisted on the play. CHC continued to push the advantage, with Lambertino being forced to make two saves in the next five minutes. But play eventually evened out and after Hewlett denied Whaley during the 86th minute, the game headed for overtime.

Each team gained a corner kick during an otherwise uneventful first 10 minutes of extra time. As it appeared the Golden Falcons might leave town with a draw, they committed a foul in the Griffin offensive third, leading to Galaska's heroics.

CHC owned a 12-9 shot advantage, with the Griffins' Jimenez and the Golden Falcons' Herrero Nieto getting off four each. Hewlett earned the victory with five saves, and Lambertino also stopped five shots.

Felician takes a brief respite from conference play to host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Lyndhurst, N.J.
