Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University overcame multiple large deficits before ultimately going down to a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) defeat to visiting West Chester University in non-conference women's volleyball action on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium.
Junior outside hitter Hannah Chiswick (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley) had 10 kills and seven digs and senior outside Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) totaled nine kills and 12 digs for Felician (6-12). Senior outside Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led three West Chester attackers in double figures with 12 kills.
The teams were meeting for the second time this season. On Sept. 14 in West Chester, Pa., the Golden Falcons scored only 40 total points in dropping a 3-0 decision. On Tuesday, however, the three sets combined to feature 19 ties and four lead changes
The Golden Rams (13-5), from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, scored the first eight points of the match, a run which included three service aces from Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton). But on an ace by Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia/Gimnazjia Smederevo), the hosts drew even at 13-13. Felician never moved ahead, however. At 20-20, West Chester captured four consecutive rallies. A Vucic kill saved one set point, but WCU's Jillian Borgerding (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) answered to end the set.
Set 2 followed a similar pattern. Felician fell behind, 9-3, and still trailed, 17-12, before coming back to 19-19. The teams traded points from there until 25-25, at which point West Chester emerged victorious on a Vreeswyk kill followed by a shared block.
Felician led Set 3, 15-14, only to see WCU pull away with a 7-0 run which included three kills from Maria Harding (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth). The Golden Rams' Grace Whitney (Glenside, Pa./Abington) hit .391 with 11 kills and three blocks, and teammate Olivia Rudjord (Foglesville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) hit .429 with 10 kills and five blocks.
Felician received a match-high 23 digs from senior libero Alondra Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Colegio de La Salle). Vucic finished with seven kills.
