Diaz, Chang Reach Milestones As Volleyball Edges Dominican

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – After falling behind two sets to one, the Felician University women's volleyball team rebounded to earn a 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 16-14) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over host Dominican (N.Y.) College on Wednesday night on the Hennessy Center's Coach Baxter Court. Felician (7-12, 5-3 CACC) swept its regular-season series from the Chargers for the third consecutive full season.

Felician senior libero Alondra Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) led all players on the night with 29 digs. Diaz Sanchez ran her career dig total to exactly 1,000, becoming the fourth player in the 18-year history of the Golden Falcon program to reach four figures.

The victory was also the 100th as an NCAA women's volleyball coach for Felician mentor John Chang.

Felician's outside hitter combination of senior Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J.) and junior Hannah Chiswick (Pittstown, N.J.) each ended the night with 16 kills and eight digs. Junior setter Lily Ainsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in 54 assists and 17 digs and freshman outside Kaitlyn Carr (Rogers, Ark.) produced a match-high 23 kills and 12 digs for Dominican (3-14, 1-7).

After the teams split the first two sets, the Chargers broke open a close third with a 7-0 run for a 23-15 edge and moved ahead in the match. The hosts then road the momentum to take an early 7-4 lead in Set 4. With her team still trailing, 17-16, a block by Felician junior Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia) touched off a 4-0 Golden Falcon run and the visitors never trailed again.

The deciding set was tied, 9-9, before Felician captured the next three rallies, leading to a Charger timeout. A Vucic block and a kill by Catherine Lentsch (Elkhorn, Neb.) pushed the Golden Falcon edge to 14-10. Domincan went on to save all four match points. Lentsch and Felician setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) teamed up on a block to put their team back on top, and a kill by Chiswick ended the match two hours, five minutes, after the first service.

Lentsch finished with eight kills and Vucic had seven kills and three blocks.

Erica Moore (1593) and Amber Doran (1346), who both played from 2007-10, top the Felician all-time digs list. Diaz Sanchez's former teammate Sierra Gallagher is the only other player in the 1,000-dig club. Gallaher lifted 1,050 digs in just two seasons, 2018-19.

Chang was 46-33 in three seasons at Polytechnic University (2004-06). He is in his eighth year at Felician with a won-lost record of 54-149. He has won a conference Coach of the Year award at both stops. Chang also owns 27 NCAA men's volleyball victories.

Felician plays a tri-match at Georgian Court University on Saturday, including a CACC match versus the Lions at 10 a.m. The Golden Falcons will complete non-league play for the season with a noon contest against American International College.
