Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – Felician University sophomore defender Nicole Jenal (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal, but the Golden Falcons were defeated by host Caldwell University, 2-1, in overtime in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field.
The Cougars (5-5, 3-2) emerged victorious on a successful penalty kick by graduate midfielder Teaghan Darling (Forked River, N.J.) with 51 seconds remaining in the first extra session.
Caldwell had opened the scoring in the 37th minute on a Mariana Ferreira (Union, N.J.) marker, and carried the 1-0 edge into halftime. That score held deep into the contest. About one minute after Jenal had entered the game for the first time as a substitute, Felician earned a corner kick. Freshman Bianca Revenga's (Caracas, Venezuela) offering found the head of Jenal, who evened the contest with 11:36 to play in regulation.
Caldwell gained a corner during the 86th minute, but neither team put a shot on frame for the balance of regular time. But as the overtime ensued, the hosts earned the better of play, getting off three shots and earning a corner. The pressure eventually paid off when a Cougar attacker was fouled inside the 18-yard box. Darling struck the penalty past Felician freshman goalkeeper Julia Aguilar (North Bergen, N.J.) to end the contest.
Caldwell owned a 15-12 shot edge. Felician junior Aroa Herrero Nieto (Almeria, Spain) was the individual leader with six. Jenal's goal was the Golden Falcons' only corner opportunity of the day, with the hosts attempting four. Aguilar was credited with four saves, while her Cougar counterpart, senior Jamie-Lee Bamford (Braintree, U.K.) earned the victory with six.
Felician travels to Chestnut Hill College for a noon kickoff on Sunday in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
