GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – The Felician University men's golf team came up on the short end of a 36-hole dual match with the College of Saint Rose on Friday and Saturday at Pinehaven Country Club. The host Golden Knights produced a team score of 611, while Felician countered with 661.
The Saint Rose Fall Shootout was originally scheduled as a four-team event. But rain early in the week delayed the Northeast-10 Conference Championship by a day, forcing schedule changes for two participants. That turn of events left the Golden Falcons and Golden Knights to compete head-to-head.
Felician entered a lineup of five players, while Saint Rose competed with their five-man team plus four individuals. Of the 14 entrants, senior Gonzalo Maldonado Felices (Almeria, Spain/Stella Maris) was the top Golden Falcon, placing fourth. Maldonado Felices was the only Felician player to eclipse 80 both days on the par-71 course, carding a 78 on Friday and a 79 on Saturday for a +15 total of 157.
Golden Falcon sophomore Nathan Sampson (Leeds, England/Crossley Heath School) was also among the top 10 finishers. Sampson's weekend took the form of 79-85—164, good for ninth place.
The balance of the Golden Falcon contingent consisted of sophomore Dylan Molloy (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) (11th, 88-83—171) and freshmen Kristian O'Grady (Thiells, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) (12th, 84-89—173) and Brandon Mudrick (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley) (13th, 84-96—180).
Saint Rose led, 306-325 after Day 1. Paced by a 66 from Jon Del Priore, the Golden Knights bettered their team score by a stroke on Saturday, while Felician settled for 336. Del Priore, who carded a 76 on Friday, finished as the medalist with his even-par 142.
Felician has a quick turnaround. The Golden Falcons will participate in the 54-hole Post Eagles Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Watertown, Conn.
