Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – After two hours and 20 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Felician University women's volleyball team fell two points short of host Caldwell University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday evening on the George R. Newman Center's Corino Court. The Cougars saved two match points and emerged with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14) victory.
During the fourth set, Felician senior Alondra Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) had two service aces. She became the fourth player in the 18-year history of the program to reach 100 career aces. She is the first Golden Falcon, however, to amass 100 aces and 1,000 digs. Diaz Sanchez, who had 30 digs and seven assists on Wednesday, sits third in school annals with 1,193 career digs.
Felician (10-18, 8-8 CACC) put four attackers in double figures in kills. Senior outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J.) accumulated 15 kills and 17 digs and freshman outside Olivia Anderson (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) put down a season-high 14 kills. Felician junior setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) recorded season bests of 48 assists and 21 digs.
Caldwell was led by a triple-double from sophomore setter/opposite hitter Reese Sherwood (Salem, Ore.), who totaled 15 kills, 20 assists and 18 digs. The Golden Falcons fell to 2-5 this season in matched decided in five sets.
After claiming a tight first set, Felician failed to hold onto an 18-11 lead in dropping Set 2. The third set followed a similar pattern, with the visitors in front as much as 14-9 and as late as 21-19, only to see the Cougars capture six of the final seven rallies.
A mid-set 7-0 run keyed Felician's Set 4 victory and forced the decider. Caldwell erased an early four-point deficit in Set 5 for a 10-10 tie, only to see Felician rebound and reach match point with a 14-12 edge. But the Golden Falcons never scored again. Amanda Schlitz (Durham, N.C.) kept the hosts alive with a kill, a Karin Ojeda (Toms River, N.J.) ace evened the score, Sherwood put down a kill for a Cougar lead and a Felician timeout, and Ojeda ended the match with another ace.
Bridget Thompson (Houston, Texas) (12 digs) and Catherine Lentsch (Elkhorn, Neb.) had 12 kills apiece for Felician. Caldwell's Schlitz finished with a match-high 23 kills and three blocks.
Caldwell (3-23, 3-14), which ended a 16-match losing streak, completed its season. Felician hosts Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J., in its regular-season finale, and will also be home for a first-round CACC playoff match on Nov. 16.
