Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michael's) recorded 42 assists and a career-best 34 digs to lead Felician University to a 3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-19, 25-21) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over visiting Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. The match marked the end of the 2021 regular season for both schools.
The Golden Falcons celebrated Senior Day. In a brief ceremony prior to the match, the Felician athletics department honored exchange student Berta Mayolas Aragones (Barcelona, Spain/Santa Teresa de Liseux), a setter/defensive specialist, and four-year veterans Alondra Diaz Sanchez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Colegio de La Salle), a defensive specialist/libero, and outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell). Diaz Sanchez totaled 20 digs and a career-high eight assists, while Sloan put down 16 kills with 12 digs and three aces.
Both teams entered the day locked into the No. 2 seed in their respective divisions of the CACC. The victory, however, allowed Felician (11-18, 9-8 CACC) to complete the year with a winning record in conference play. On Tuesday, the Golden Falcons will host Thomas Jefferson University during the quarterfinals of the CACC Championship tournament, while Wilmington will entertain Post University in Newark, Del.
Martinez's 34 digs are the most in Felician history by a player who did not man the libero position during the match. Classmate Catherine Lentsch (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn South) hit .438 with 14 kills and six blocks.
The teams traded convincing set victories to begin the day. Felician then leapt out to a 14-7 Set 3 advantage. Still trailing 17-10, Wilmington closed to within 21-19, only to see the hosts capture the final four rallies.
The fourth set was tied nine times. At 20-20, Felician forced three consecutive Wildcat attack errors. Wilmington gained a sideout to remain in contention, but consecutive kills by Sloan and Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia/Gimnazija Smederevo) handed the victory to the Golden Falcons.
Felician's 94 digs were six short of the program record for a four-set match set earlier this season, and its 10 blocks were a season high. Wilmington (20-12, 14-4) was paced by nine kills and 12 blocks from junior middle Angel Oliver (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep).
Felician's first-round playoff match against Jefferson will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Job Gymnasium. Further details will be released on Monday.
