Volleyball Falls To Caldwell In Spring's Last Home Match

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team completed the home portion of its Spring 2021 schedule with a 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-23) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Caldwell University on Tuesday evening at Job Gymnasium.

Junior outside hitter Maddie Sloan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led Felician (1-4, 1-4 CACC) with 15 kills and added six digs. Golden Falcon sophomore outside Hannah Chiswick (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley) turned in 11 kills and six digs.

The hosts fell behind, 8-2, in Set 1 and never recovered, forcing them to play from behind in the match. A tightly contested second set was tied on seven occasions. Felician saved three set points before committing consecutive attack errors with the score even at 25-25.

The Golden Falcons erased a 14-9 Set 3 deficit by capturing five consecutive rallies. Caldwell restored the five-point edge at 21-16, only to see Felician once again knot the score, 23-23. But the Golden Falcons' bid to extend the match came up short, as the Cougars' Amanda Schlitz (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) was involved in blocking Felician's next two attacks to end the match.

With the victory, Caldwell (3-2, 3-2) clinched a home match in next week's conference championship tournament, and rendered the Golden Falcons unable to do so. Freshman setter/opposite hitter Reese Sherwood (Salem, Ore./Sprague) accumulated seven kills, 36 assists, 7 digs and four blocks for the Cougars.

The match was the final one in Rutherford in the careers of Felician seniors Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani), a middle blocker, and opposite hitter Melody Carbonell (Jersey City, N.J./NYC Museum School). Both players are on schedule to graduate and have declared an intention to decline the opportunity to use the NCAA's blanket COVID-19 extension to participate in 2021-22. Asbery recorded four kills and three blocks on Tuesday, while Carbonell had six kills and two blocks.

Felician completes the regular season with a 6 p.m. match on Thursday at Dominican (N.Y.) College. Per CACC policy, no spectators are allowed at conference events until further notice; check www.caccnetwork.com for webstream details.
