Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Holy Family University converted on a corner kick opportunity early in the second half and went on to a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over host Felician University on Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
The defenses took center stage during the match, often breaking up opportunities or intercepting crosses before the sides could become dangerous offensively. Holy Family held slight edges on the day in shots, 6-4, and corners, 4-1.
The match turned during the fourth minute of period two. The Tigers (4-1-1, 3-0 CACC) gained a corner, and Jacqueline Ziegler's (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) strike headed in front of the near post. Freshman teammate Brynn Hess (Benton, Pa./Benton) struck the ball with her midsection in traffic inside the post at 48:48.
Shortly thereafter, Felician was awarded a free kick above the Tiger 18-yard box. But Aroa Herrero Nieto's (Almeria, Spain/IES Las Marinas) strike was corralled by HFU goalkeeper Alayna McSeed (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem). The Golden Falcons struggled to challenge McSeed for the balance of the match, save for a last gasp corner kick during the final minute that the Tigers successfully defended.
Both goalkeepers touched the ball early. Felician freshman Julia Aguilar (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) was put to the test just 24 seconds into play, stopping a Hannah Fiorentino (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) offering. Felician junior Lindsey Riera (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) got two shots on frame during the first seven minutes, both stopped by McSeed. But the offensive pace slowed for the remainder of the half.
McSeed finished with three saves for the clean sheet. Aguilar also stopped three shots.
The Golden Falcons return to action on Oct. 2, when they entertain Georgian Court University in CACC action at 5:30 p.m. in Lyndhurst.
