Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Felician University women's soccer team allowed second-chance goals during the closing seconds of the first half and the second overtime period and went down to a 2-1 non-conference defeat to the host College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon at Dolphin Soccer Park.
Junior transfer Aroa Herrero Nieto (Almeria, Spain) scored for Felician (0-2). The Golden Falcons and Dolphins were meeting for the first time.
The sides appeared poised to enter the halftime break scoreless. But a late attack by CSI resulted in a shot being blocked by the Felician defense. Dolphin freshman Emily Albano (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the rebound out of the air and into the net only five seconds before the whistle for intermission.
Herrero Nieto evened the ledger with a direct kick just 1:55 into the second half. The Golden Falcons maintained offensive pressure but never were able to capture the lead. CSI freshman goalkeeper Sara Villacres (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) entered the contest at halftime and finished with 12 saves in 64 minutes.
Villacres' efforts paid off when, late in extra time, Felician committed a foul deep in the CSI offensive third. Betine Voight Pentzen's free kick from just outside the 18-yard box bounded off the bottom of the crossbar, but fellow freshman Nadia Evola (Marlton, N.J.) was on the spot to knock home the loose ball for the golden goal. Thirty-one seconds showed on the game clock.
The Golden Falcons were unable to leverage advantages of 22-10 in shots and 8-0 in corner kicks. CSI's goals were its only two shots on frame. Herrero Nieto led all players with nine shots, and Felician freshman Katinka Ummels (Urmond, Netherlands) got off four.
The Golden Falcons play at Lincoln (Pa.) University at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
