Women's Soccer Scores First But Comes Up Short at TAMIU

Box Score

LAREDO, Texas – The Felician University women's soccer team notched the game's first goal but finished on the short end of a 4-1 non-conference result to host Texas A&M International University on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

Fifth-year senior Jackie Zapata (Laredo, Texas) scored twice for TAMIU (4-0).

Felician first turned the scoreboard with 10 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first half on Kate Braun's (Long Branch, N.J.) second goal of the season. Fellow freshman Anne Noonan (Hawthorne, N.J.) assisted on the play. But with fewer than three minutes showing on the opening period's game clock, the Dustdevils were the beneficiary of a Felician own goal, and the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

Just 26 seconds after the second-half restart, Zapata came up with the go-ahead score. The Golden Falcons were limited to just four shots after the break, putting one on goal, and TAMIU tallied in the 65th and 80th minutes to secure the victory.

The Dustdevils earned a 14-9 shot advantage for the day. Golden Falcon junior goalkeeper Brieanna Martins (Clifton, N.J.) made seven saves in her first start of the season.

Felician plays its home opener on Wednesday, welcoming the College of Staten Island to Tryon Field for a noon kickoff.
