Golden Falcons Defeated After Knights Second Half Surge

RUTHERFORD, N.J. - On November 25, Felician women's basketball hosted day one of their holiday tournament weekend. The Golden Falcons appeared in the second match up of the afternoon (2:00pm) when they welcomed Queens (N.Y.) College to JJJ Gymnasium. 

The Golden Falcons held a 29-24 lead going into halftime, but the visiting Knights held the hosts to only nine points in the third quarter to run away with the 59-50 win. 

Here's What Happened:
  • Felician opened up the contest with a 9-4 run on points by Erica Egan (Dublin, Ireland), Katherine Ritchie (Mentone, Victoria, Australia), and Ane Valle (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain). From there the green-and-gold extended their lead to 17-8 to wrap up the first 10-minutes of regulation. 
  • The Golden Falcon momentum was maintained in the second when Mar Vidal (Tona, Spain) netted a trey for the 20-12 lead over the Knights. The largest lead for the hosts was presented in the second half at nine when Valle recorded a lay-up, 28-19. 
  • In the final minutes of the second quarter, the Golden Falcons were held to only one point on an Aisha Traore (Bronx, N.Y.) free throw while the Knights tallied five and trailed the Golden Falcons 29-24 to enter the half. 
  • Throughout the third, the Knights defensive pressure halted the Felician momentum when they were held to only nine points throughout; the visitors rallied 14 to equalize the score at 38 as the final stanza began. 
  • Felician surrendered their lead in opening seconds of the fourth when the Knights saw their second lead of the afternoon... their first was in the opening 15-seconds of the contest, 2-0. After a last tie of 42, when Uzor Uchidiuno (Toronto, Canada) clinched a pair of free-throws, the Knights went on a 10-2 run and held their largest advantage over the hosts, 43-52. 
  • By the green-and-gold's final point of 50, the hosts dropped 50-59 in the day and to a 0-4 overall record for the 2023-24 season. 
Box Score Insights:
  • Felician forced 28 Knight turnovers and converted 24-points off of them, however, the squad was out rebounded 42-30 and Uchidiuno led the charge with eight and Vidal with seven. 
  • Valle paced the offensive end for Felician with 16-points and Ritchie right behind with 13. Both freshmen added four steals to the mix and Ritchie had six assists. 
  • Uchidiuno had nine points and went 5-6 from the line. 
  • Sarah McSpadden (Melbourne, Australia) made her first appearance of the 2023-24 season after a season ending injury last year and recorded two points in six minutes. 
  • Both squads shot in the 30% range, the Knights higher with 36% (15-42). The Golden Falcons struggled from behind the arc going 2-17 - Vidal and Egan netting the two - for 11%
The Golden Falcons will be back on the hardwood for the final day of the Holiday Tournament when they host Molloy University at 12:00pm.
