#2 Men's Soccer Eliminated By #7 Lions After Shootout

RUTHERFORD, N.J. - #2 Felician men's soccer hosted #7 Georgian Court Lions at Tryon Field for a Monday Night Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference event. After the Golden Falcons trailed 2-0 after the first half, they were able to equalize at two and forced two 10-minute overtime periods that ultimately led to a shootout.

Coming into the night, the Golden Falcons sat with a 2-7-2 all-time meetings record with the Lions- dating back to 2013. On Oct. 19 the Golden Falcons captured the 1-0 win to bounce back into the winner's circle resulting in their fourth shutout win of the season, but also their last.

Here's What Happened (Regulation):
  • Georgian Court hauled game momentum early after they booted two balls (24th & 40th) behind Felician keeper for the 2-0 lead after the first 45-minutes of play.
  • Andy Alvarez (Elizabeth, N.J.) put the Golden Falcons on the board with a 76th-minute goal from Tim Jaeger (Schwalmtal, Germany) to give the green-and-gold momentum for the first time in the match.
  • GCU committed a foul inside the goal box after a Lorenzo Ferrari (Palestro, Italy) stride to put Alex Ramos (Almada, Portugal) in front of the net for a PK goal to tie, 2-2
Overtime:
With the 2-2 score forcing a double-overtime, the only shot of the 20-minutes was brought by Jaeger in the 103rd-minute (2OT), but sailed high and away from the goal.

Shootout:
  • With 10-players at midfield, the Golden Falcons sought made opportunities from Salvador Rang (Doorn, Netherlands), Gianluca Trastulli (Rome, Italy), Manuel Otero (Sanxenxo, Spain), Odhran Lawlor (Moate, Ireland), Ramos, Alvaro Martin Castedo (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain), and Emanuele Moretti (Rome, Italy).
  • Felician found the back of the net five times from Rang, Otero, Lawlor, Ramos, and Martin Castedo.
  • The shootout sat tied 2-3 in favor of the Lions after a Trastulli miss. Lawlor posted the third make of the event (3-3) and Moretti stunned a Lion shooter immediately after for the tie at 3.
  • Moretti took the final kick for the green-and-gold that resulted in a miss that put the Lions in winning position if they netted the next shot... they did.
Despite the Felician men's soccer playoff run being cut short, the Golden Falcons had a successful 2023 regular season as they capped off the regular season with a 10-5-3 overall and 7-3-1 CACC record.
