Second-half Surge Leads Felician Women’s Basketball To Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

Rutherford, NJ – The Felician University Women's Basketball team made the most of their trip to Rochester, New York, picking up two victories to open up the 2024-2025 season. After defeating Daemen in their season opener on Friday, the Golden Falcons followed it up by defeating Roberts Wesleyan University, the host of the Redhawks Tip-Off Classic, by a score of 77-65 on Saturday afternoon.

Roberts Wesleyan was in control during the first half of play on their home court, taking a 9-point lead into the half. While the Redhawks held nearly a double-digit lead, it would soon be erased by a second-half surge from the Golden Falcons. Stephanie Formby scored five consecutive points to begin the third quarter, while a three-pointer from Sarah McSpadden cut the lead to just one. After going back and forth, Felician was able to tie the game up with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter, courtesy of a three-point field goal from Natalia Lucic. The two non-conference foes battled back and forth well into the fourth quarter, but Felician was finally able to start pulling away with just under five minutes remaining. Ane Valle drained two free throws to give the Golden Falcons the lead, and another Lucic three-pointer gave Felician a five-point cushion. From that point on, the closest Roberts Wesleyan would get was within five points as Felician pulled away to secure a double-digit victory on the road. The Golden Falcons dominated in two areas of the game: points in the paint and bench points. Felician outscored Roberts Wesleyan 36-20 in the paint, while the Golden Falcons bench stepped up, outscoring the Redhawks reserves by 20 points (30-10).

Freshman Stephanie Formby had an impressive weekend to begin her college career, finishing Saturday's contest with a game-high 22 points. Natalia Lucic had 15 of the Golden Falcons 30 bench points, while Ane Valle put together another double-digit scoring effort in the win.

The Felician University Women's Basketball team will return to New York on Wednesday, taking on non-conference foe Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. This marks the third game of a five-game road stretch for Felician to begin the 2024-2025 season.
