BRIDGEPORT, C.T. - The Felician women's basketball team have experienced overtime play four times throughout the 2023-24 season. Tonight marks the fourth and their second overtime victory over the University of Bridgeport Tuesday evening in Connecticut.
In a low scoring contest, the defense of the Golden Falcons prevailed to give the opportunity for
Mar Vidal (Tona, Spain) to bucket the dagger trey for the comfortable distance and the win, 53-40.
Here's What Happened:
- All Golden Falcon scorers were held to single digit points throughout the first half as they trailed the Purple Knights by 21-24. By the end of the opening minutes of regulation, Felician held a 13-11 lead over the hosts, but were then held to just eight as the Purple Knights were able to take the lead at the halfway point.
- The third quarter featured both teams scoring eight points apiece. Ane Valle (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain) was able to sink the quick layup with less than a minute remaining in the third to chip away at the advantage, 29-30, but were put back down by three going into the final stanza.
- During the fourth, both teams have hit a dry spell and went scoreless for four minutes and Vidal dusted off the Felician offense with her first three of the contest, 34-36. In the next green-and-gold possession, Valle was able to equalize the contest at 36 and flipped the score into the Felician hands by completing the three-point play at the line.
- As the end of regulation neared, both teams battled for the advantage and ended the 40-minutes with a tie at 41 for the extra minutes.
- Valle and Aisha Traore (Bronx, N.Y.) ignited a 9-0 run for the Golden Falcons with two buckets for the four point lead with 3:30 remaining. The green-and-gold forced a Purple Knights turnover to put the ball into the hands of Vidal for the dagger trey to put an contest out of reach as the final buzzer sounded, 53-41.
Box Score Insights:
- Valle led all scorers with 15 points and snagged three steals. Vidal was right behind the rookie with 12 points, four assists, and two steals to seal the deal Tuesday evening.
- Traore continues to dominate the boards after grabbing 19 rebounds in the night while also tallying nine points.
- Felician shot 31% (19-62) from the field in comparison to the Purple Knights 25% (14-57).
The women's basketball squad (10-13 / 10-4 CACC) have clinched their 2024 CACC Playoff berth as the battle for the #1 seed with Post University is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm in Waterbury, C.T.
