New Haven, CT. - The Felician University women's basketball team saw its historic season come to a close on Friday afternoon, falling to Daemen, 75-62, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II East Regional, hosted at Southern Connecticut State.
The Golden Falcons came out strong in the opening quarter, shooting an impressive 75 percent from the filed while building an early 9-0 lead. Felician led by as many as eight in the early minutes before Daemen rallied late in the frame to take a 23-21 lead.
Daemen extended its lead in the second period, using a 3-point barrage and defensive pressure to stretch the lead to double digits. Despite a pair of free throws from
Stephanie Formby and late baskets from
Mckenzie Palek and
Deviney Jackson, Felician trailed 39-33 at halftime.Â
The Wildcats continued to control the tempo in the third quarter, capitalizing on turnovers. Felician answered with baskets from
Ane Valle and Palek to keep the deficit manageable. The Golden Falcons mounted one final push in the fourth quarter. Daemen responded with a quick scoring run and converted at the free throw line.
Felician shot 49 percent from the field and held a 38-32 edge in points in the paint, but Daemen forced 31 turnovers and converted them into 28 points.Â
Felician finishes the season with a 24-8 overall record after capturing the program's first-ever CACC Championship and making its first NCAA Tournament appearance.Â
