PURCHASE, N.Y. – Felician College graduate student Adrian Sutcliffe (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) scored three goals and the Golden Falcons held on for a 4-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over host Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Purchase College. The victory, combined with other conference results on Saturday, allowed Felician (8-8, 5-5) to secure a berth in the 2011 CACC Tournament.
The Golden Falcons broke a 1-1 tie on an unassisted goal by sophomore Azedine Maazouzi (Brussels, Belgium) in the match's 38th minute, and took the one-score advantage into halftime. Sutcliffe converted his second penalty kick of the contest at 67:17, then picked up key insurance goal fewer than five minutes later. A Kevin Sinic (Leibnitz, Austria) shot was saved by Concordia goalkeeper Paul Wavell (London, England), but the rebound came right to Sutcliffe, who finished for his first career hat trick.
Despite playing a man down due to a red card, the Clippers (2-12, 2-7) mounted a comeback, receiving scores from Jorge Brohoquis (Manizales, Colombia) in the 74th minute and Michael Barbetto (New City, NY) in the 81st. With less than a minute to play and Felician keeper Anthony Tsouhnikas (Clifton, NJ) caught outside the box, freshman back Stephen Bray (Cricklade, England) cleared the ball past midfield to secure the victory.
Felician owned a 16-11 shot advantage, but the keepers were not heavily involved in the action. Tshounikas made two saves to improve to 4-1 as a starter, and Wavell was credited with four saves. The teams were whistled for a combined 39 fouls (24-15 Concordia).
Under second-year head coach Simon Nee, Felician has reached the CACC playoffs for the first time since 2006. Following two more regular-season games, including their home and conference finale against Caldwell College on Tuesday, the Golden Falcons will play first-round tournament action on Monday, October 31 at 2 p.m. with opponent and site to be determined.
