Matesic Sets Felician Kills Record In Loss

Box Score

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Senior outside hitter Jenna Matesic (Paramus, N.J.) became Felician College's all-time kills leader during her team's 3-1 (23-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-21) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball loss to host Bloomfield College on Wednesday night at Bloomfield College Gymnasium.

Matesic picked up six kills and a team-high nine digs on the night. She now has amassed 814 kills in her Felician career, one more than former teammate Amber Doran put down from 2007-10. Matesic spiked the record-breaking point late in the fourth set, as the Golden Falcons were attempting to erase a 24-17 deficit to extend the match. She reached the record total in her 101st collegiate match.

Felician (1-12, 1-6 CACC) was victorious in Wednesday's opening set, coming back from an early 13-7 deficit. With the set tied, 23-23, the Golden Falcons received kills from Olivia Emerson (Sparks, Nev.) and Anni Polscher (Elmshorn, Germany) to take the early lead in the match.

The contest turned on the result of Set 2, which featured seven lead changes and was tied 17 times. Once again, Felician found itself ahead, 24-23, but this time, the Deacons (2-8, 1-7) saved the set point. Bloomfield was subsequently denied on two of its own set points before a Josie Rezende (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) service ace gave the hosts a 28-26 win and evened the match.

Bloomfield was mostly in control thereafter. The Deacons scored 14 of the final 17 points of Set 3, turning a three-point deficit into a 25-17 win, and then jumped out to a 10-2 Set 4 lead. Felician closed a 23-15 deficit to 24-21 before finally succumbing.

The Deacons racked up 20 service aces on the night. Junior middle Dominic Spivey (Newark, N.J.) hit .448 with 17 kills and six digs.

The Golden Falcons put three hitters in double figures. Kayla Gallagher (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) led the way with 15, followed by Emerson with 13 and Polscher's 10. Junior Ann Scherer (Neustadt in Holstein, Germany) served up a career-best five aces.
