Obery Brothers Key Men's Basketball Victory Over Caldwell

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Felician College freshman guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) blocked a potential game-tying shot in the closing seconds to preserve his team's 69-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Caldwell College on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (5-9, 3-4 CACC) had trailed by eight points with eight minutes, 54 seconds, left in regulation.

Felician fifth-year senior swingman Antoine Obery (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) registered his third consecutive double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds (7 offensive) and five assists. Obery put Felician ahead to stay, 67-66, on a weak-side put-back at the 0:50 mark. The Golden Falcons rolled up a 46-32 rebounding advantage for the night, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass that led to a 20-6 spread in favor of the hosts in second-chance points.

Obery's younger brother, junior guard Anthony Obery (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) also netted 14 points, a season high. Anthony Obery scored nine points, canning three three-point field goals, as Felician got out to an 18-5 lead after six minutes. The Golden Falcons received a career-high matching 10 points from sophomore forward J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J./Linden) and junior center Ayotunde Oyeniyi (Lagos, Nigeria/Rock School [Fla.]) grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with nine points off the bench.

Caldwell (5-11, 1-6) rebounded from its slow start to take a 34-33 halftime advantage. The Cougars led for much of the second half, topping out at 56-48 following a three-pointer from rookie Dawan Lighty (Paterson, N.J./JFK-Paterson). A Pringley three at the 3:44 mark capped a 7-0 Felician run, giving the hosts their first lead of the half and setting off a string of five lead changes in 1:42 of game time capped by Antoine Obery's putback.

Each team faltered at the foul line in the final 25 seconds, alternately missing multiple chances to seal the game or tie it. However, a Caldwell miss at the line went out of bounds off of the Golden Falcons with five seconds showing on the clock, giving the visitors one more chance trailing, 69-67. Cougar sophomore Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) drove on Reid, who was able to tip the ball with both hands. Antoine Obery grabbed the loose ball and dashed upcourt before he could be fouled as time expired.

Lighty (7-11 FG, 4-6 3FG, 4-4 FT) led all scorers with 22 points. Kevin Walker (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) scored 13 points with five assists for the Cougars, and Michael Balkovic (Neptune, N.J./St. John Vianney) finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Felician was playing for just the second time in the last 20 days. The Golden Falcons snapped a five-game losing streak, and extended Caldwell's skid to four games. The teams split their regular-season series for the second consecutive season.
