Lighning Strikes Twice As Men's Basketball Loses In Double-OT

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – After making a furious comeback at the end of regulation, Goldey-Beacom College outscored host Felician College, 13-3, in the second overtime period to earn a 99-89 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over the Golden Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Goldey-Beacom (7-10, 5-6 CACC) erased an eight-point deficit with 43 seconds remaining in the second half. Lightning freshman Donte McGill (Newark, Del./Mont Clare Academy) scored nine points in the final 1:15 of regulation, including the tying three-point field goal with two players' hands in his face with four-plus seconds to play. McGill was one of six GBC players to score in double figures with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Lightning's heroics negated a career day for Felician junior forward Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic). The first-year college player logged 45 minutes and turned in season highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds. Classmate J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J./Linden) (10-16 FG) played 46 minutes and totaled 24 points and seven boards.

Felician led, 33-30, at halftime and by as many as 15 points in the second period. A three-point play by Golden Falcon sophomore guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) restored a 73-65 advantage at the 0:43 mark. A McGill three-ball kept the Lightning in the hunt, and GBC purposely sent Felician to the foul line on its next three possessions. Each time, the Golden Falcons could make just one of two. A deep three by Robert Sweet (New York, N.Y./Rice-Manhattan Center) at 0:13 made it 75-73, and McGill's shot completed regulation time at 76-76.

The teams were never separated by more than two points in the first extra session, which saw 10 points scored by each squad. But in overtime No. 2, GBC tallied the first seven points. Two foul shots by freshman Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech made it 95-87 with 1:12 to play, and Felician's only field goal of the period came on a Pringley tip-in in the closing seconds that provided the final margin.

Ridgeway-Higgs and Derrick Archie (Wilmington, Del./Christiana) each scored eight points in the 10 overtime minutes for the Lightning. Ridgeway-Higgs finished with 21 points and six assists, while Archie recorded 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. The Lightning committed only nine turnovers in the 50-minute affair.

Reid's 18 points and nine rebounds were both career highs. He also garnered five assists.

The Golden Falcons shot 22 percent from the floor in the pair of extra periods after posting a 54-pecent clip in regulation. Felician (4-14, 2-9) fell to 0-3 this season in games decided in overtime.
