NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Freshman Jessica Zalewski (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) averaged 181.8 for 10 games to help lead the Felician College women's bowling team to a 20th-place finish out of 26 schools at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Jamboree, held Friday through Sunday at Carolier Lanes.
Felician went 5-8 in dual matches for the weekend – 4-6 in traditional team matches and 1-2 during Sunday's best-of-7 Baker game playoffs. The Golden Falcons are now 9-14 on the season (8-7 traditional, 1-7 Baker).
The Golden Falcons sat in 20th place after Friday's first round of five traditional games with total pinfall of 4,139 (165.6 average). Zalewski appeared in all five games and averaged 186.0, and freshman Kristen Keller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) shot 203-179-157 for her three-game effort. Led by Zalewski's 217 and a 209 from freshman Dana-Marie Laloo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck), Felician posted a season-high 941 in a Match 4 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) University.
Six more team matches followed on Saturday, and Felician felled 5,178 pins (172.6 average) to move up a slot into 19th place. Freshman Kristin Natoli (Freehold, N.J./Howell) highlighted the day with a 233 in Match 10, a team season-high. Classmate Michelle Gulino (Howell, N.J./Howell) was the only Golden Falcon to break 200 twice, beginning her Saturday with consecutive 209-211 efforts.
The teams were then seeded into a position-round bracket for the playoffs on Sunday. Each round was contested of a best-of-7 Baker format. Felician defeated Cheyney University, four games to one, in the opening round, shooting a 226 in the clinching fifth game. The Golden Falcons then settled for 20th place by falling to Monmouth University and Cheney, each in six games.
Individually, Zalewski placed 61st out of 184 entrants who bowled at least one traditional match. Natoli also finished in the top half of the field, totaling 1,528 pins for nine games (169.8) to end up 85th.
Felician travels to Cortland State University next weekend for the Big Red Invitational in Cortland, N.Y.
